Chondromalacia Patella
Treatment
Therapeutic Exercises
- Semi-squats
- Straight leg raises in supine
- See patellar maltracking treatments
- Autologous chondrocyte implantation
- Arthroscopic debridement/resurfacing
- Lateral release (Gomoll 2006)
- Restoration of Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) (Gomoll 2006)
- Tibial tubercle osteotomy (Gomoll 2006)
- Cartilage repair (Gomoll 2006)
- Warming needle acupuncture (Qiu et al 2009)
Prevention
Removing and limiting the causal and progressive nature of physical activity, including but not limited to:
Prevention can be utilized by addressing maltracking prior to the onset of chondromalacia
(see patellar maltracking therapeutic exercises)
- Forceful running, jumping, cutting
- Activities that require bending of the knee
- Knee brace (specific for patellar lateral maltracking)
- Taping techniques
Prevention can be utilized by addressing maltracking prior to the onset of chondromalacia
(see patellar maltracking therapeutic exercises)
Education
- Limit or prevent physical activity causing pain
- Prevent further non-ideal length-tension relationships with proper maintenance
